At Amentum, we celebrate our people, our cultures, and we recognize the value of diversity and inclusion. In October, we’ll focus on National Hispanic Heritage Month while shining a light on one employee at a time. Today’s Q&A is with Carlos Perez, Program Manager, Critical Missions.

How did your military service prepare you for a successful career at Amentum?

As I rose through the ranks in the military, developing as a leader was always at the forefront of my growth. My training in leadership has proven to be invaluable. They have given me the freedom to concentrate on achieving corporate goals while protecting the welfare of the employees. Knowing that competence, discipline, and understanding result in greater levels of team morale and Esprit de Corps

How did you come to join Amentum?

Soon after my departure from the military, I was offered a job with DynCorp which is now Amentum.

What is your professional and personal background?

As stated earlier, I spent 27 years in the military. I have a bachelor’s degree in management. I write fiction novels and had one book published. I am married with three children.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

As a program manager, I am responsible for the everyday operations of the task order. I ensure that we meet all contractual requirements prescribed by our customer. I ensure that we perform our work proficiently, on time, but more importantly we perform our work safely. By achieving our goals, our team members grow to take pleasure in the outstanding job they produce.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

I would say becoming a U.S. citizen, enlisting in the military, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major, and then transitioning into the civilian sector where I have been able to demonstrate my abilities to help others to succeed as a team.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

Amentum is a professional and dedicated organization that mirror some of the same ideals that I value.

What are you passionate about?

Succeeding as a team. Treating everyone as a valued member and crossing the finish line together.

What’s your career advice?

If you want to be successful, understand your responsibility to your organization and your team. Treat everyone with dignity and fairness. Never demand respect, earn it.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

The most essential principle that we must always uphold in all we do is safety. Our staff members need to feel comfortable coming to work in a setting where they know the management is concerned about their security.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

The internet, in my opinion, has been our era’s greatest successful technology. We may now interact with one another, exchange expertise, and gather data that will help us make better decisions

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

Optimism and motivation are contagious. Work hard and have fun.

While thinking about Hispanic Heritage History month, please provide a response to one of the following questions:

At Amentum, we celebrate our people, our cultures, and we recognize the value of diversity and inclusion. In October, we’ll focus on National Hispanic Heritage Month while shining a light on one employee at a time. Today’s Q&A is with Ismar (Izzy) Donovan, Senior Recruiter, Engineering, Science & Technology.

How did you come to join Amentum?

I joined Amentum as a legacy PAE employee back in 2015, supporting several programs within the NSS group.

What is your professional and personal background?

I have over 12 years of recruiting experience, having transitioned to recruiting after years of government contractor work relative to Spanish translation in support of law enforcement operations. I have a law degree from Venezuela and, from the U.S., a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State Fullerton and legal interpretation & translation certification from UCLA. My recruiting experience has covered a host of industries such as: defense contracts, space & intelligence community, federal law enforcement agencies, immigration and citizenship services, global health, financial solutions, corporate and executive roles, and most recently Science and Technology. I have held the following roles: Lead Recruiter, Senior Recruiter, Program Lead, Senior Talent acquisition Advisor, Corporate Recruiter Manager.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

The core of my profession is to help change lives in the process of increasing the effectiveness of our company.  As a recruiter, I play an essential role in this process as my job consists of sourcing and matching the perfect candidate for our open position. I focus on finding the right person to increase the effectiveness of our company. Assisting people with finding the right job for them is often part of fundamentally changing their lives for the better. On an emotional level it is extremely rewarding to find the perfect fit who will thrive in our culture. Being a recruiter drives me to re-invent myself daily. I truly enjoy connecting with people and helping them find the job that ultimately leads them to a successful career. If they are capable and they love their job, I believe they will thrive with us and find personal fulfillment.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

Earlier in my career I supported large scale criminal investigations that resulted in dozens of federal convictions. The largest investigation culminated in 57 federal convictions. This experience was challenging in many ways and was a highlight in my career. However, my work as a recruiter, having played a part in advancing other  people’s careers is something of which I am most proud.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

At Amentum we have such a diverse workforce. We are surrounded by so many different backgrounds and cultures. I also enjoy the dense portfolio of our company. We have many different areas that create opportunities for growth for everyone in the defense industry.

What are you passionate about?

Diversity, acceptance, tolerance, collaboration, humility, work ethic, and family.

What’s your career advice?

Be your own advocate, have a plan and never settle for less than you deserve.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

Safety for me is not to have to worry about the future.  Favorite safety tip: Be aware of your surroundings and have self-awareness.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

Hot water. I say this because growing up in Caracas, Venezuela we had to endure water rations (government dictated schedules). Taking a “hot” bath required an adult to heat water on the stove, then pour it in a huge bucket.  And, that is how you ended up with a lukewarm bath.

While thinking about Hispanic Heritage History month, please provide a response to one of the following questions:

  • What’s your favorite book? Doña Bárbara
  • What author has influenced you the most? Rómulo Gallegos & Gabriel García Márquez
  • Favorite film? Como Agua para chocolate
  • Favorite musician?   Shakira, Mana

At Amentum, we celebrate our people, our cultures, and we recognize the value of diversity and inclusion. In August, we’ll focus on our Next Gen Employee Resource Network while shining a light on one employee at a time. The NextGen ERN is a network where young professionals, and those young at heart, can come together to deepen Amentum’s culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Developing a sense of community, cultivating professional and personal growth opportunities, and fostering an environment of generational knowledge sharing. Today’s Q&A is with Samira Traore, GMS / USAID HASC (Humanitarian Assistance Support Contract).

How did you come to join Amentum?

I joined the USAID BHA (Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance) HASC contract in 2020, after having served in the Peace Corps in Mozambique. I was looking for opportunities that would combine my public health and development interests, and working on this contract has been a great way to further explore that.

What are your professional aspirations?

My professional aspiration is to maintain a focus on meaningful, people- and community-oriented work at the core of everything I do. No matter where life takes me, I know that if I keep that at the forefront, I will stay true to myself and my vision.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

I support the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance’s Supply Chain Management Division by ensuring that humanitarian assistance commodities arrive in the right quantities to the right beneficiaries in the right places and at the right time. Our work makes a positive impact by helping people experiencing humanitarian emergencies gain access to the resources they and their communities need.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

My proudest career moment was in April 2023, when I hosted a workshop in Italy with the World Food Program (WFP) alongside two other BHA colleagues. We spent a week designing a traceability project that would modernize our supply chain and streamline BHA/WFP’s efforts to improve food safety and quality while increasing visibility across the supply chain. It was a great opportunity to meet WFP colleagues who I had worked closely with for several years, and it was very rewarding to be in a room full of others from across the humanitarian sector who all came together behind the conference’s shared purpose.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

I enjoy getting to meet others on the Amentum contract who share a similar interest for humanitarian assistance and having the opportunity to learn from them and their respective experiences.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about supporting and strengthening global communities, especially through a public health lens.

What’s the best your career advice you have received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to approach every challenge or obstacle with a “why not you?” mindset. You may not always feel like the best person for the job, but why couldn’t the best person for the job be you?

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

My favorite safety tip is to always download an offline copy of a Google Map prior to traveling abroad!

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

I am constantly fascinated by things humans aren’t naturally able to do (think flying or breathing underwater), but with technology we have made available for ourselves. Even though we ourselves can’t fly, we’ve managed to figure out ways to fly across the world in metal tubes. We can’t breathe underwater, but snorkels and scuba tanks make that possible. We couldn’t survive in space on our own, so we created spaceships. It’s hard for me to narrow down one specific invention as the best, but I would certainly say this is my favorite category!

Why is it important that we spotlight our unmatched NextGen Talent?

It can be intimidating to join such a large organization, especially as a younger professional who may not be coming with a lot of experience in this sector. It is important to spotlight NextGen talent because seeing other younger professionals who can not only enjoy working within but also succeed at similar career paths can be encouraging. I think this is a really great way to motivate the next generation of humanitarian leaders!

Today’s Q&A is with Brandon Boswell, Contracts/Subcontracts Analyst II, Engineering, Science & Technology.

How did you come to join Amentum?

I joined Amentum in 2018. I was working at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and wanted a change and to work closer to home. I found Amentum (AECOM at the time) on Indeed and applied. It has been wonderful ever since.

What are your professional aspirations?

I plan to continue to grow and develop my skills in the Contracts Administration/Analysis field, build on my knowledge so far, and one day become a Manager, Director or even VP of Contracting.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

I communicate with and foster good relations with Government points of contact, representatives of other contracting companies, and countless people at Amentum internally. I review subcontract agreements, teaming agreements and non-disclosure agreements, and review language to ensure Amentum interests and proprietary information are protected.  I also contribute to the pursuit of new and incumbent contracts throughout the proposal process. Contracts also ensures accuracy of the information input into the eCMS system.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

I was part of a small group of people who lead the integration efforts for Contracts after the acquisition of DynCorp International. Reviewing processes and procedures from both companies to create a One Amentum policy was challenging and rewarding at the same time. I relished the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic group who created policies and procedures for the entirety of Amentum.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

I enjoy learning about the specific programs (new or old) that Amentum performs or targets and how it impacts the American military. I appreciate the services of all the military personnel, and all the work that Amentum performs in support of them gives me great satisfaction. The professional relationships and friendships I have built in my time here are also incredibly important to me and will continue to be something I can continue to lean on going forward.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about fostering great working relationships, whether it be with Government POCs, internal Amentum personnel, or our other contract partners. I approach each conversation with an open mind and as an opportunity to learn and build a professional relationship. I enjoy being thought of as someone that can be trusted and counted on to perform any task and complete that task to the best of my ability. I will continue to go above and beyond to the best of my ability.

What’s the best your career advice you have received?

The best advice I have been given is to cultivate perseverance. When I began my tenure here, I had no experience in the Contracts Administration realm.  But over the last 5 years, I have continued to pursue the correct answer, ask the right questions and seek out guidance when necessary. I do not expect to know everything, and that is okay. Doing the research, discussing the topic/question with a manager or other colleague fosters a good working relationship for one, but also re-emphasizes that desire to continue my career development.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

To me safety means not only ensuring you are paying attention and considering your well-being, but you are taking the time to look out for your fellow colleagues and potential guests to the offices across Amentum.  Many times, we take for granted how simple it could be for something harmful or even potentially life threatening to occur to us. Taking a couple of brief moments a day to pay attention and notice if anything is out of the ordinary, could save someone from a slip or fall, or something more severe.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

The airplane. As someone who loves to travel and explore the world and new destinations all the time, the airplane has allowed traveling worldwide to become more of a commodity, rather than a luxury. Also, in terms of business, the airplane has revolutionized how we can do business today. To be able to have an in-person meeting in Washington DC one morning, be able to hop on a plane and have another separate in-person meeting in San Francisco that afternoon is truly remarkable.

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

I think NextGen is a great program that incentivizes developing the next group of leaders, professionals, and potential executives from within the current Amentum ranks.

Why is it important that we spotlight our unmatched NextGen Talent?

As an ever-growing company with tens of thousands of employees working all around the globe, it can be difficult to be noticed on an individual basis. Programs such as the NextGen Talent program creates an incentive for individuals to continue doing incredible work, values the individual’s contributions and brings a sense of pride to that individual if/when they do get noticed and recognized. Such a program helps Amentum to stand out and show that the company values all the incredible work being performed throughout the company as well as incentivizes individuals to continue to strive for higher achievement in their career development. Speaking from experience, I am incredibly honored that I am being noticed for the work I do.

Today’s Q&A is with Vanessa Rodriguez, Assistant Lead Graphic Designer, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA)/ Content Team.

How did you come to join Amentum?

I started working under the Macfadden contract in 2018 that was later acquired by PAE and then Amentum.

What are your professional aspirations?

My primary objective is to enhance my existing skill set and gain more knowledge in my current role, which will enable me to progress further in my career. I am dedicated to achieving professional growth and contributing towards the success of my organization.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

Our graphic design team focuses on creating visuals that help communicate BHA’s responses to external audiences. This includes designing and formatting fact sheets, humanitarian assistance overviews, blogs, and infographics. We also produce BHA’s Annual Report and design graphics for social media. Additionally, we support USAID messaging campaigns led by BHA. Our efforts have a positive impact on the organization by effectively communicating our services and goals to our audience.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

During my work on BHA’s Annual Report, I acquired valuable experience in overseeing large-scale projects. My responsibilities included gathering information and designing cohesive layouts that conveyed the organization’s message. This achievement is one of the highlights of my career, and I was also thrilled to be promoted to assistant lead graphic designer. It was gratifying to know that my colleagues appreciated my work and recognized my efforts.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

Working with my colleagues is always a pleasure. I really appreciate the valuable insights and guidance provided by Amentum managers. Their leadership skills are truly admirable.

What are you passionate about?

I have a strong passion for creating designs that effectively communicate our organization’s purpose to the public. Additionally, I am highly motivated to continuously learn and gain experience in order to improve the efficiency of my work and transform design issues into valuable learning opportunities.

What’s the best your career advice you have received?

I received some wonderful career guidance from a colleague recently. They recommended approaching design challenges by taking a moment to step back and gather feedback from others. This way, we can incorporate multiple perspectives into our work and continue to grow and improve.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

To me, safety is about preventing harm or risks to oneself and others. I strongly believe in trusting one’s inner instincts when it comes to safety. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s best to find an alternative solution and reach out to other for advice or help.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

I find Adobe Creative Cloud to be a valuable tool that greatly assists me in my day-to-day work. Through the years, I’ve gained considerable knowledge about its various products and how they enhance my work efficiency, allowing me to tackle design issues more effectively.

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

It’s important to ask questions frequently, even if they may seem silly, and offer assistance whenever possible. If you’re unsure of how to help, guide them towards the appropriate resources.

Why is it important that we spotlight our unmatched NextGen Talent?

Recognizing the efforts of colleagues fosters a positive work environment and inspires pride and dedication in the team. It reinforces the value of everyone’s contributions and our common goal.

A former supervisor once instilled in my mind, “What interests my customers, fascinates me.” If you keep this positive thought in mind, nothing will stop you from going the extra mile to perform your role exceptionally. Also, your “job” not only becomes something you “have to do”, but something you “want to and enjoy doing”.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

Pay attention. That’s the best thing you can do to stay safe. That not only means to be attentive to your surroundings but understand the hazards of each task you are about to perform.

Mathematics. It is the basics of everything scientifical that fed the technology of yesterday and will still be feeding the technology of tomorrow.

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

I am honored to be a part of this Amentum team that shapes and “modernizes the most critical missions anywhere in the world, today and in the future.” Being from a small island, we are limited in career growth and support to our country. Amentum opens the door to expand that opportunity both from a personal and professional perspective, but also to play my part as an American citizen.

What does Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month mean to you?

I am honored to share the spotlight among the “Greats” of all Asian American Pacific Islanders, especially the Filipinos who have paved the way for our culture throughout the world. This month, we memorialize our Filipino history and share our values and traditions. We join the proud kababayans around the world who contribute to the missions we support to create a “better future.”

How did you come to join Amentum?

I joined Amentum through the acquisition of PAE.

What is your professional and personal background?

After graduating with my bachelor’s degree in 2008, I received an opportunity to work as an Administrative Assistant in one of the PAE projects in Kabul, Afghanistan. This opportunity helped me grow my career in Human Resources starting as the HR Specialist in the later part of 2010. I worked in HR for the American Embassy Kabul project for 11 years until the evacuation from Afghanistan in 2021. After evacuation, I was transferred to the Operations & Maintenance Support Services (OMSS) Iraq Program. Currently, I am working as an HR Generalist for the OMSS program in Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center in Iraq.

For my personal background, I am from and currently residing in Myanmar. I have a loving husband and two sisters. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information Systems from London Metropolitan University. I love travelling, reading, experiencing new things and challenges and improving myself in my career and knowledge.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

I am responsible for providing HR clerical and technical support for functional areas in support of the HR department.

What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

I would say my accomplishments or proudest career moment would be successfully transitioning to an HR career and developing myself in the area by mainly learning from my managers, career development courses and reading.

What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?

Some of the reasons I enjoyed working with Amentum are being able to work with a diverse workforce which enable me to learn different cultures and backgrounds, collaborating with teams. Additionally, management empowered us to perform our tasks and responsibilities and assisted and coached us whenever necessary.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about listening to others and assisting them, analyzing and overcoming new challenges and obstacles. As well as learning new things for improvement.

What’s your career advice?

Be a team player, be genuine, true to yourself and look for improvements and challenges.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. The Safety awareness should start from myself, and everyone should have the awareness and the ability to speak up when things are not safe.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?

I would say Information Technology – Internet and VOIP software. With the assistance of the modern technology, in addition to the business advantages, we can keep in touch with the family even though we are working away from home and loved ones. While we cannot be home, for so many of the occasions, with the family physically, Information Technology enables us to be involved virtually.

What does Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month mean to you?

Nowadays, with so much uncertainty and fights, it is always good to be living harmoniously among diverse group of people and learn diverse culture, traditions and history and honor the diversity.
